How to Decide Where to go on Family Vacation

Vacations seemed to be easier to plan before the kids came along. Back then, it was only two people and the alternatives appeared endless and the planning simpler. You could choose somewhere for a intimate weekend getaway based on its remoteness and intimacy. You could choose a location far flung and exotic just because you had never been there before. Possibly your personal favorite was to go on extended hiking and camping trips with minimal gear. Even if your vacation planning was something other than this, what ever that alternative used to look like prior to having a spouse and children compared to now wanting to plan a family vacation, it is a more challenging job now.

Now there are further concerns to factor in when traveling and planning a family vacation. Depending on the age and number of your children there is a ton of gear that either has to be carried along with you on the trip or rented at your destination. If you are traveling with babies or a 2 or 3 year old, there are considerations about automobile seats and strollers. For younger children, you have the concern of how to keep them occupied and not driving you lose your mind or destroying something in their boredom. When traveling with older kids, it can be a little easier to control them in the car, train, or plane, but once the final destination is arrived at, then they will be looking for an activity to do that is fun and that also allows them some time away from the parents.

After taking into account the child's needs, there is still the consideration of the parents (and other adults if coming for the trip) who will be seeking a nice combination of family time as a group while still wanting to have some quality time as well to remind them of what their pre family vacations where like. We all need to reminisce and remember those days too. Often mom and dad will discount their own wishes in vacation planning to defer to something entertaining for the kids, even though the greatest plan would take the two factors into equal consideration.

Balancing all the competing wants and wishes of the family to arrive at a family vacation plan that makes everyone satisfied or at least reasonably content is not always an easy task, and is why family vacation planning can be a a lot more challenging task than necessary. Not just that, but based on the family budget, certain options that may make everyone happy aren't available as viable options since they will not be economically possible.

If money is tight, you may have to drive instead of flying. This could decrease the overall amount of options available, but after the trip is over a driving trip may have provided a far more enjoyable trip anyway. Not just that, but the planning for a road trip compared to a airplane trip can be a lot different. Preparing kids for their 1st air travel experience is almost an exercise in itself. You will have to make sure that you are familiar with the most current security measures and rules to make sure that everything runs smoothly on departure day. On the other hand, driving for 14 hours at a time with a vehicle full of people also requires its own kind of planning for how everyone will keep occupied during the driving portion of the trip.

These are just some of the items facing families as they try to choose the top vacation location for them to get the best experience possible and make the best memories. There are lots of choices to make in this process. Make a best effort at communicating and coordinating and choose to find the best vacation spot for your family.
